High-protein diet

Protein products

The problem of being overweight is an urgent problem for many people, but it can only be solved by combining physical exercise with a nutritious diet.If you seriously decide to take care of your body, lose weight and build lean muscles, you need to try a protein diet.This is one of the most effective ways and you don't have to go hungry.Quite the opposite!The food will be quite filling.

Let us remember that protein is the main building block of our body.In addition, they also perform many other tasks to support life, so their presence in the daily human diet is mandatory.Protein is composed of amino acids and is of plant and animal origin.Animal proteins are considered the most valuable, containing all the amino acids necessary for humans.Plant polypeptides are not rich in amino acids so their nutritional value is lower.With a lack of protein, muscle mass begins to decrease, which is gradually replaced by fat, immunity and resistance to stress decrease, fatigue comes faster, and the condition of the skin, hair and nails deteriorates noticeably.Typically, a person needs 1 g of pure protein per day per kg of body weight.

The essence of a protein diet

The protein diet is based on the following postulates:

  • Simple carbohydrates are completely excluded;
  • Protein accounts for 60% of the daily diet;
  • Fats (plant-specific only) are present in minimal quantities;
  • Protein-rich foods for better digestion are supplemented with small amounts of vegetables and fruits.

It is known that carbohydrates are the main source of energy.When they are completely eliminated from the diet, an energy deficit occurs, after which the body begins to burn glycogen, and then fat.

  • Food on a protein diet should be divided into small portions every 2.5–3 hours, 5-6 times a day, while exercising daily.
  • Special attention should be paid to product quality.Sausages, smoked meats and semi-finished products from supermarkets should definitely be excluded, since first-class meat and fat are not always used in processing.In addition, it includes all kinds of herbal and chemical additives - preservatives, dyes, flavors, etc.
  • Priority should be given to lean meats, poultry and fish, since the abundance of lipids interferes with the complete absorption of proteins.In this regard, it is better to avoid eating salmon, catfish, goose and duck, cod liver, pork and beef brisket.

Contraindications and disadvantages of protein diets

A high-protein diet gives great results in the short term but cannot be recommended for everyone as it is not balanced.Due to the low content of vegetables and fruits, the body does not receive enough vitamins, trace elements and other beneficial substances necessary for humans.Additionally, high protein intake in the diet can lead to blood acidification, as evidenced by a pH reading falling below 7.35–7.45.In this case, the body needs more calcium, which begins to be removed from the bones.This threatens the development of osteoporosis.Therefore, a high-protein diet can be applied for a maximum of a week, followed by a long pause.The majority of nutritionists believe that such a diet can be applied only once every six months, and some experts adhere to a more strict approach: no more than once a year, as it creates a large load on the organs of the digestive system.

The following side effects may occur when following a high-protein diet:

  • Animal protein takes a long time to digest, and when carbohydrates and fiber are in short supply, the process takes longer.As a result, food stays longer in the intestines, the process of decomposition and fermentation is more intense, leading to bloating and bad breath.
  • The load on the kidneys increases, which can cause swelling in the legs and puffiness, as well as in the liver.
  • Because food is digested slowly, it can cause constipation and aggravate gastritis and enteritis.
  • There may be increased blood pressure, possibly increased cholesterol levels and an increased risk of blood clots.
  • Feeling tired more quickly and people being more irritable.
  • In women, hormonal imbalance and ovarian dysfunction may occur.

From the above, a high-protein diet is contraindicated in the following cases:

  • kidney and liver disease;
  • gout, diabetes, poor blood clotting;
  • chronic diseases of the digestive tract;
  • pregnancy and breastfeeding.

It is also not suitable for the elderly, people with cardiovascular disease and teenagers.

People who love sweets will most likely have difficulty tolerating this diet.They may feel more tired and stressed due to lack of carbohydrates.Often, after completing the course, they again eat high-calorie sweets, quickly regaining the lost kilograms.But for meat eaters, it will not be a burden.

The main advantage of the diet is that it provides a constant feeling of fullness, since protein foods take longer to digest.In addition, protein-rich foods also help build muscle mass, so this type of nutrition is very suitable for bodybuilders to dry the body.

Prohibited and allowed foods on a protein diet

Protein diets completely exclude the following foods:

  • sweets (cakes, cakes, sweets and other desserts, including natural honey);
  • sweet fruits (bananas, persimmons, dates, figs, apricots, grapes, watermelon);
  • flour dishes, pasta and bread products;
  • fried and spicy foods, sauces, sausages, smoked meats, marinades;
  • potatoes, legumes, cereals;
  • animal fat;
  • sweetened drinks, soda, alcohol, store-bought juices.

Instead of them, the following will appear on your board:

  • lean meat and poultry (veal, beef, rabbit, skinless chicken, turkey fillet);
  • lean fish, seafood, canned fish in oil;
  • Offal dishes (liver, tongue, lungs, kidneys)
  • raw eggs, boiled eggs, omelets;
  • low-fat milk and fermented milk products;
  • mushroom;
  • low-fat cheese;
  • unsweetened pears, dried and fresh apples (preferably green), kiwi, citrus fruits, sour fruits;
  • tomatoes, cabbage, cucumbers, zucchini, green vegetables;
  • sugar substitutes;
  • oatmeal, brown rice, buckwheat, bran;
  • vegetable oils (linseed, olive);
  • water – 1.5 liters per day, tea, unsweetened coffee, fresh juice.

The weight of one serving at a time should not exceed 250 grams, and the energy value of food per day should be 1200 kcal.The main focus is on meat, fruits, vegetables and bran as ancillary products.They contain fiber, which is necessary for normal digestion because protein-rich foods cause constipation.Usually, a person also needs carbohydrates;With a high-protein diet, they are replaced with oatmeal or brown rice.The incidence of use of these products may be increased if fatigue is markedly increased or dizziness occurs.You can also supplement with multivitamins because your daily diet lacks them.

Protein in food

  • When on a protein diet, you should prepare the simplest dishes possible.
  • Meat, fish and poultry can be boiled, stewed, grilled on the grill or in the oven with a minimal amount of vegetable oil, and can also be steamed.
  • You should not overuse spices and spicy additives, or add too much salt or pepper to your dishes.For a spicy taste, you can add a little mustard.
  • Store-bought sausages are not suitable for a high-protein diet.
  • Low-fat fermented milk products - cottage cheese, hard cheese - fit perfectly into a protein diet.
  • For dinner, you can drink protein shakes, sold in sports stores as sports nutrition, especially during heavy physical activity.

Sample protein diet menu for the day

Protein diets can be short-term (3-7 days) with three meals a day and long-term (usually 2 weeks) with multiple meals.The longer you adhere to the diet, the more vitamins and trace elements it should contain.

The approximate power supply diagram may look like this:

  • 1st breakfast: yogurt without fillers (optional: low-fat kefir, cottage cheese, two eggs), tea or coffee;
  • 2nd breakfast: green apple (orange, grapefruit, kiwi);
  • lunch: chicken (fish, veal) with vegetables, brown rice, buckwheat, oatmeal (about five spoons);
  • afternoon snack: natural yogurt (low-fat cheese, kefir, fermented baked milk, low-fat cottage cheese);
  • dinner: fish (veal, seafood, chicken) with vegetable salad, tea, fresh juice diluted with water.

Usually, a protein diet is maintained for 5-7 days, less often - 14 days.It is extremely rare that if the body tolerates such nutrition easily, it must be monitored for a month, but doctors strongly recommend against testing.The protein diet menu for a week usually contains a small amount of vegetables and fruits, but as the time of use increases, their quantity increases.And if you feel very tired and sleepy, it is better to increase your carbohydrate intake.Therefore, a 14-day protein diet menu often contains a lot of oatmeal, brown rice, buckwheat and vegetables.

Types of high-protein diets

There are many options for protein diets.They all belong to the low-carbohydrate group and are based on the same principle - more protein, less carbohydrates.

  • One of the most popular options is the egg diet.It is relatively easy to tolerate because the daily diet is quite balanced.One is also expected to avoid fats and limit carbohydrates, but fruits and vegetables are allowed in fairly large quantities.Eggs, chicken or quail, are boiled or baked in the oven like an omelet.
  • The basis of the Japanese diet is seafood, fish, rice and soybeans.Carbohydrates and fats are present but in limited quantities.Salt, sugar, baked goods made from white flour are completely excluded.You're also allowed to eat cabbage, eggplant, zucchini, carrots, tomatoes, lean beef, chicken, eggs, unsweetened fruit, low-fat dairy products, and whole-grain bread.
  • Another type of protein diet is cottage cheese.In this case, the emphasis is on fermented milk products and green vegetables.
  • The Dukan diet initially allows skinless chicken, turkey, fish, low-fat dairy products, a spoonful of oat bran per day, and after a few days vegetables are allowed.

High-protein diet during pregnancy and breastfeeding

Protein is especially necessary during pregnancy and lactation, but a pregnant or lactating woman's diet must be balanced in all respects.During this period, a woman really needs fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, trace elements and other valuable substances, and a protein diet in its pure form cannot provide all this.Therefore, pregnant and lactating women should not comply.

What to pay attention to?

Nutritionists and doctors strongly do not recommend switching to a protein diet without prior consultation with a specialist, as it can aggravate chronic diseases.With a two-week course, you must supplement with multivitamins, and in case you feel more tired and uncomfortable, the menu should be rich in carbohydrates.It is strictly forbidden to combine such nutrition with the use of drugs and alcohol.

How to get off the diet

You need to exit any diet gradually so that the lost kilos do not return after a short time.First of all, you should not increase your diet suddenly.Previously excluded foods can be gradually added, but flour and sweets should be the last in the daily diet.It is better to increase the intake of fruits and vegetables, as well as cereals.You need to continue eating lean meat, fish and dairy products.Alcohol is allowed no earlier than 5 days after switching to a regular diet.

The main advantage of a protein diet is that it allows you to lose 3–5 kg in just a few days without fasting, but it should be used very carefully and not for long.
